The University is seeking an associate professor to the Department of Biology for a temporary position starting 1 October 2019 til 31 september 2021.

With over 40,000 students and more than 9,000 employees, the University of Copenhagen is one of the largest institutions of research and education in the Nordic countries. The Department of Biology is a worldwide leader in genomic and metagenomics research of both basic and applied biology. With the newly founded Computational Biodiscovery group, the activities also combine environmental microbial communities with Machine learning techniques and are tightly integrated with the most advanced life science dedicated supercomputing facility in Europe. The associate professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within supercomputing, machine learning in life science and Next Generation Sequence data analysis. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

The position in Computational Biodiscovery will be offered to an individual who has made well documented research contributions at an international level within the area.
The candidate must be able to document outstanding research at an international level within three or more of following topics:
- life science supercomputing
- bioinformatics of completely sequenced eukaryotic/microbial genomes and metagenomics datasets
application of machine learning methods in life science
- development of large scale analysis pipelines
- handling of large scale big data projects including data governance

Qualifications are expected within the following areas:
- Management of research projects
- Management of computational infrastructure
- Experience with international collaborations
- Research-based collaborations together with industrial partners
- Ability to develop collaborative research project ideas
- Project and teaching (at bachelor/master level) management/development skills
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills
- Fluency in English is considered essential, Danish is an asset

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Commencing salary is currently up to DKK 469.409 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 80.268).

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
