The School of Culture and Society invites applications for a position as assistant or associate professor in classical philology.
Applicants should state explicitly whether they are applying for an assistant professorship or an associate professorship.
If an assistant professor is appointed, the position will be a three-year training position involving research and teaching obligations and publications at doctoral level (as a minimum). The emphasis is on the applicant’s research potential. After three years, and subject to appropriate funding, an associate professorship in classical philology will be announced in open competition. If an associate professor is appointed, the position will be permanent.
The position is available from 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Place of employment: Department of History and Classical Studies, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

The position
The position will be associated with the Department of History and Classical Studies at the School of Culture and Society.
The position is being offered with a view to attracting a talented and dedicated scholar and teacher who is expected to play a key role in the continued creation of internationally recognised research areas within the field of classical philology at the department (recently, the department has hosted a major philological research project enabstractJV_titled Cultural Encounter as a Precondition for European Identity). The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society in general and the Department of History and Classical Studies in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Participation in the daily life of the Department of History and Classical Studies is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.

Research
The successful applicant will be part of a strong international research environment at the department and will be expected to produce research publications at an international level and to contribute to ongoing research activities through participation in meetings, seminars etc., as well as stimulating the development of new research projects at all levels within the field of classical studies.

Teaching
Applicants for the assistant professorship should be prepared to teach and supervise students at BA and MA level, while applicants for the associate professorship will also be expected to teach at PhD level. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods. The position involves teaching duties in the classical languages and literatures on an advanced level, with a special emphasis on literary theory, intellectual history and reception.
If an assistant professor is appointed, the person concerned will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant is expected to contribute to talent development in the field of classical studies and at the Department of History and Classical Studies in general. The successful applicant will be expected to recruit and supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant is expected to engage in knowledge exchange and the public dissemination of knowledge as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University. Applicants for the associate professorship should document prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in classical philology. Applicants for the position must also have teaching experience corresponding at least to the experience gained during a PhD degree programme.
Applicants for the assistant professorship must be able to document experience of or interest in the points mentioned below at least at PhD level. Applicants for the associate professorship must be able to document competences corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.
Applicants must document:

• Academic publications at a high international level in the field of classical philology.
• The ability to teach broadly within the field of classical philology, including both Greek and Latin texts.
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile in classical philology.
• Experience of or interest in:
  • participation in national and international research networks.
  • communication and knowledge exchange.
  • interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research.
  • interdisciplinary teaching including innovative teaching methods.
  • teaching development, the supervision of students at all levels, talent development, research management, and the development of PhD courses.
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding.

Please note that only submitted publications will be assessed: a list of publications is mandatory but not sufficient. As a result, applications without submitted publications will not be assessed.
Applicants must be able to teach and communicate in Danish at university level. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

Research environment
The Department of History and Classical Studies at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile as well as a strong research network. The research programme called Classical Antiquity and its Heritage embraces studies in the ancient cultures and societies in the regions around the Mediterranean and their meaning, reception and afterlife until the present. The programme covers both material and textual remains. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and the strengthening of core disciplinary competences, the programme aims to stimulate new approaches and ground-breaking research on the ancient world. It is among the strongest environments in the Nordic countries for research into classical antiquity.
The programmes in classical studies at Aarhus University comprise both classical archaeology and classical philology at BA and MA level, as well as subsidiary subjects in Latin, Greek and classical civilisation.
