An assistant professor position is available in the Colloids and Biological Interfaces (CBIO) group headed by Professor Thomas L. Andresen, DTU Nanotech, the Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby. The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

The CBIO group is a diverse group of approximately 50 people; including associate professors, assistant professors, postdocs, PhD students, and technical staff.

The overall aim of the research group is to develop novel nanocarrier systems for improved drug delivery and through careful characterization of the nanocarriers and their interactions, gain insight into the mechanisms that affect and ultimately govern uptake in vivo.

This position will focus on utilizing electron microscopy to characterize novel nanomaterials and their interactions with biological systems, including both cell and animal models.

Responsibilities and tasks

The assistant professor candidate will contribute to a wide range of ongoing research initiatives within the research group as well as develop new methodologies to better characterize nanomaterial interactions with biological systems. Specific tasks for this assistant professor position will include the following:

• Ongoing characterization of liposomal formulations via cryo transmission electron microscopy;
• Development of TEM and SEM techniques to characterize nanoparticle uptake in cell and animal models;
• Participating in the direct supervision of Master/Ph.D. students and Postdocs in projects related to electron microscopy;
• Direct involvement in educational activities within the department including teaching and developing courses as necessary;
• Dissemination of research results through presentations at international conferences and symposia and publications in scientific journals.

The candidate will operate within an interdisciplinary research team as well as actively collaborate with fellow colleagues within the department and other DTU departments. The candidate is expected to develop strong external relations with universities and industry within Denmark and internationally. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate strives for scientific excellence within their field.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We are seeking an assistant professor with a strong background in electron microscopy characterization of nanoparticles and their interactions with biological systems. The candidate should hold a PhD in materials science and engineering with a focus on electron microscopy methodology development. The candidate should have experience characterizing both hard and soft nanomaterials (inorganic and organic nanoparticles) as well as considerable experience preparing biological samples for the electron microscope.

Specifically, we are seeking a candidate who has substantial experience in developing novel transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy techniques to facilitate better localization of nanoparticles in biological systems with improved throughput. The candidate should also have experience utilizing advanced analytical electron microscopy techniques including energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The candidate should also have experience working with liposomal formulations.

The candidate should:

• Have in-depth knowledge of advanced biological sample preparation techniques;
• Have a strong interest in working experimentally in a cross-disciplinary environment;
• Have experience working independently on large collaborative research projects;
• Demonstrate a strong potential and profile for research, documented through original publications and citations in international scientific journals;
• Have a willingness to teach and work with the department to develop new courses based on your areas of expertise.

Proficiency in the English language, both written and oral is required.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment.
