The Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for two Assistant Professorships in Bioinformatics. The positions are fixed to respectively 3,5 and 4 years and vacant from 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Biology is among the largest Departments of the University of Copenhagen. It employs about 475 academic and technical staff and hosts research programmes and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of biology/biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. In addition to a PhD-programme, three BSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, bioinformatics) engage close to 2000 students.
The new positions will be embedded in the Section for Computational and RNA Biology. The Section's research spans the DNA, RNA and protein worlds and covers the methodological spectrum from wet-lab molecular biology to advanced computational model building and statistical inference.

The Section has state-of-the-art wet-lab and computational facilities embedded in a cross-disciplinary research environment. Section staff currently includes three professors, five associate professors, three laboratory technicians, and more than 40 post docs and PhD students that enjoy an informal, trusting and collaborative working atmosphere. The Section is supported by substantial external funding.

Description of the positions
The research focus of the applicants should fall within one of two areas: 1) Bioinformatics of NGS analysis and/or population genetics, or 2) Data analysis with an emphasis on statistical modelling and computational biology.

Candidates are expected to integrate with and strengthen our research environment of high-quality bioinformatics research. Complementarity with regard to the current research focus of the section is of essence. Duties also include teaching and supervision of students at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD-levels, with prime course assignments within our bioinformatics Master's degree program.

Qualifications/profile
Applicants should have a scientific background within bioinformatics, computational biology or related subject and as a minimum hold scientific qualifications equivalent to the Ph.D. graduate level. The assistant professors must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and/or have high potential to make a future scientific impact at the international level as evidenced by first author publications in high-ranking international journals. Documented university level teaching experience in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching in bioinformatics or computer programming at an introductory level is also expected. Finally, it will be an advantage for candidates to have one or more of the following qualifications:

• A good understanding of statistics (including R) and extensive experience in statistical data analysis.
• Have strong programming skills.
• Documented experience in the analysis of Next Generation DNA Sequencing data
• Documented experience with the topic of protein structure analysis or machine learning or probabilistic models.
• An active network of international collaborations

Terms of employment
The positions are open from 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 424.526 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.594). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
