DTU Compute’s Section for Cognitive Systems, invites applications for appointments as Assistant or Associate Professor in machine learning and signal processing. The positions are available from February 1, 2019 or according to mutual agreement.

The Section for Cognitive Systems is a lively and research oriented group of scientists and support staff with a shared interest in information processing in man and computer, and a particular focus on the signals they exchange - audio, imagery, behavior – and the opportunities these signals offer for modeling and engineering of cognitive systems.

September 2018 we welcomed the first class of students in DTU’s new “AI and Data” bachelor education.

The Section is working actively to keep a healthy work-life balance and we are aware of the challenges facing young families in academia. Working at DTU provides much flexibility and families in Denmark enjoy a highly developed and affordable child care system.

Our department DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. At the same time we are an engineering department covering informatics and communication technologies (ICT) in their broadest sense. DTU Compute plays a central role in education at all levels of the engineering programs at DTU - both in terms of our scientific disciplines and our didactic innovation.

The aim of the new position is to consolidate and expand the Departments research and teaching in machine learning and signal processing.

Responsibilities and tasks
In order to be successful you are expected to participate in departmental teaching at all levels. The teaching will cover Bachelor-, Master- and PhD-level courses. Bachelor courses are taught in Danish and English, other courses in English. For international candidates, DTU offers Danish language courses for the purpose of being able to teach in Danish within the first 2-3 years.

The duties of an assistant and associate professor include research, research-based teaching and innovation. The Section is keen to ensure that assistant professors are given supervision and guidance, including education in university teaching. 

For the position the key qualification requirements are as follows: 

• Documented scientific production/publication and research potential to become an international leader in your field.
• Ability and desire to contribute to the Section’s national and international collaborative efforts.
• Ability and desire to disseminate research results and research-based innovation in society

Qualifications
Candidates for an 

• assistant professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
• associate professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training

Your research background should be within intelligent systems, statistical modeling and machine learning as documented by publications in top AI conferences (NIPS, ICML, ICLR, AISTATS, AAAI, CVPR etc).

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to 

• Experience and quality of teaching
• Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
• Societal impact
• Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
• International impact and experience
• Leadership potential and collaboration
• Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The assistant professor position is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
