Over the next five years, Novo Nordisk R&D will identify and execute on new strategic priorities, enabling the build of a more diverse, dynamic and scientifically leading pipeline of drug discovery and development projects. As an integral part of this focus, Novo Nordisk R&D will identify new sources of innovation to advance a portfolio of differentiated medicines in areas of unmet medical needs. Specifically, we aspire to elevate the innovation bar in our core therapeutic areas, expand into new therapy areas, and intensify external innovation activities.

 

About the department

The R&D Strategy and Research Portfolio unit serves as an internal strategy and portfolio management function collaborating across Research and Development to define, refine and drive strategies to accomplish these goals in Novo Nordisk. The R&D Strategy and Research Portfolio unit also has a more focused role in the Global Drug Discovery (GDD) organisation that is responsible for maturing drug concepts that can be developed into innovative medicines. The R&D Strategy and Research Portfolio unit thus directly supports and reports to both the top management in R&D and GDD. The unit consists of 11 professionals with backgrounds in science, business and consultancy and is overall responsible for driving the key central R&D strategic processes, portfolio management and to ensure proactive, efficient and professional governance for our pre-Phase 2 project portfolio.
 

The position

The Digital Strategy Director will report to the Corporate Vice President of R&D Strategy and Research Portfolio. You will be responsible for driving and supporting strategic, organisational projects and processes that drive digital transformation within GDD to ensure future innovation, competitiveness and growth.
 

The key charge of the digital strategy director within the unit will be to help guide the GDD organisation as it advances into a new operating model in which digital solutions are leveraged to improve productivity and operational excellence and to produce new scientific insights and opportunities. The digital strategy director will be responsible for identifying, implementing and refining digital solutions to accelerate and advance drug development efforts. This includes applications that accelerate and facilitate research, innovation and externalisation across GDD. Importantly, the digital strategy director will work in close collaboration with other R&D units, including Global Research Technologies and Global Development in facilitating and coordinating digital initiatives that span across R&D. Specific topics will include data management (aggregation and synthesis), data sharing, advanced analytics (including machine learning and AI), bioinformatics, collaboration and open innovation.

 

The Digital Strategy Director will act as an advisor to the CVP, R&D Strategy and Research Portfolio, and will independently lead and drive complex strategy projects and processes as mandated by GDD Management and R&D Management. You will lead these processes by working with cross-functional project teams involving subject matter experts and upper management across R&D, and/or with consultancy support. The day to day work includes a blend of strategic and conceptual thinking, competitive intelligence analysis, scientific and business analytics, complex project and stakeholder management, and ensuring the overarching strategy is implemented and executed within operations across R&D. Occasionally, you may be deployed as an internal consultant to a sister line of business.

 

The position is based in Novo Nordisk’s Research site Måløv near Copenhagen.

 

Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in science or engineering, or equivalent experience in digital systems application and/or development, Masters, PhD or MD/PhD within life science, preferred
• 7-10 years digital system development or application experience combined with at least 5 years pharma or biotech experience from within a large pharmaceutical company or from a top consultancy firm
• Proven track record and toolkit in project management and strategy development and implementation; experience in change management a plus
• Passion for scientific innovation; high level of familiarity with evolving trends in the digital and biomedical industries; specific experience in the R&D value chain a plus (ie. translational research, emerging biomedical technologies, and/or clinical development)
• High-energy, can-do attitude, results-orientation and the ability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment
• Significant experience in creating and delivering clear and compelling executive-facing presentations
• Fluent in English; international experience a plus
