Engineer for research support in Visual Inspection for industrial automation tasks - re-announcement

With a view to obtaining more qualified applicants and thus a better basis for the decision of employment, the Department has decided to re-announce the position.

We are looking for a candidate to aid with automation tasks involving visual inspection.

The SDU Robotics section specializes in robot solutions involving sensorial processing, mathematical modeling, learning and simulation, all targeted at advanced robot systems for industrial and other application domains.

We are growing our focus on visual inspection tasks. Our main focus is on visual inspection during robotic assembly processes, but part or surface inspection is also of interest. We are interested in a wide range of solutions, ranging from usage of industry-standard software to developing our own approaches from scratch (especially deep learning based approaches).

We have a strong application focus and are collaborating with industrial partners in most of our activities. Therefore, application cases will often be driven by concrete real-world cases and it will sometimes mean dedicated developments for a specific industry partner.

Your role will be to take over some of these developments and the whole process until deployment (where applicable), depending on the case independently or in cooperation with one of our researchers or PhD students. This will require communication with the different stakeholders (researches, PhD students, industrial partners) and therefore requires good communication skills, preferably both in English and Danish.

We are interested in applicants with either significant prior experience within the computer vision domain or new graduates with initial experience in computer vision.

Your tasks will include:

• Analysis and evaluation of industry-standard tools for visual inspection.
• Applying existing tools to real industrial visual inspection problems.
• Development of new algorithms for visual inspection together with our researchers.
• Data (image) collection for learning based approaches.
• Specification and construction of image acquisition setups for visual inspection tasks.
• Testing and evaluating developed solutions in a structured manner.

What makes you the right candidate:

• You have either: Multiple years of practical experience in the use of computer vision in an industrial automation context, OR An academic education involving some coursework on computer vision.
• You are able to work independently and purposefully, partially following detailed specifications, but also partially with the freedom of working from frameworks and ideas without detailed specifications.
• You are thriving as an active team partner, and you can collaborate with experienced professors, younger PhD students as well as industrial partners.
• You have a positive work attitude.
• You can communicate well orally and written in English.
• You have strong analytical skills.
• You have multiple years of experience with relevant programming languages (primarily C++ and Python).

Additional qualifications:

• Strong Danish communication skills (oral and written) are a plus.
• Prior experience with different computer vision and/or machine vision topics is a plus.
• Experience with computer vision frameworks (e.g. OpenCV, Halcon and Cognex) is a plus.
• Experience with deep learning or machine learning techniques is a plus.
• Experience with Linux is a plus.
• Experience with ROS is a plus.
• Experience with Matlab is a plus.

The position is placed in the SDU Robotics section which is part of The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute at The Faculty of Engineering, SDU in Odense. You will be working closely with the Computer Vision researchers within the section.

Employment shall take place in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC.
