The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic automated fermentation scientist to join the Screening and Fermentation group. DTU Biosustain is an expanding research center that focuses on the use of advanced metabolic engineering techniques and synthetic biology tools for developing the next generation of cell factories. The center comprises various research units (several scientific Sections and a Core unit). The Screening and Fermentation group is part of the Core unit (iterative cell factory development loop) and is exploiting a novel technology for the sustainable production of value chemicals. Responsibilities and Tasks As fermentation staff scientist you will be part of the Screening and Fermentation group and primarily focus on bacterial and yeast fermentations at different scales applying different strategies (batch, fed-batch, chemostat) and physiological characterization of the corresponding organisms. As scientists you will carry out experiments independently and contribute to the development and set-up of small scale continuous cultivation systems as well as process optimization and method development. You will actively take part in translational projects aiming towards yeast and E. coli production and platform strains that are generated within the Core unit. Qualifications •PhD degree in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related field •Running, controlling and maintaining batch, fed-batch and chemostat cultivations ideally for both bacteria and yeast •Experienced in interpreting data obtained during and after fermentation processes •Good planning and organization skills •Ability to work simultaneously on different projects •Excellent collaboration and communication skills (English) •Familiar with standard office programs Additionally the candidate should be: •Familiar with MATLAB •Trained to operate liquid handling stations such as the Tecan Evo or Hamilton Vantage platform •Experienced applying omics techniques for system wide studies, especially metabolomics and fluxomics •Familiar with small scale cultivation systems Assessment In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to •scientific production and research potential at international level •innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas •the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities •an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience •the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation We offer We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on education, research, public-sector consultancy and innovation, which contribute to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. The post of research scientist is a permanent post as part of which the employee after a maximum of 4 years transfers to a position as senior research scientist provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and is deemed qualified.
