OCEANA seeks an experienced marine scientist to be part of our European Science Department to develop and implement campaign activities on fisheries and marine conservation issues.  

This position is permanent with a 12 month trial period. The position is based at Oceana’s Copenhagen office; the successful candidate will work in close cooperation with Oceana’s staff across Europe and provide support also to other campaigns as needs be. She/he will report to the Fisheries Director.  

Duties/Responsibilities:  

The successful candidate will take responsibility for achieving different goals within our campaign for sustainable fisheries and to end overfishing as well as liaising with broader, on-going campaigns, like the Save the Oceans – Feed the World initiative. The work will be carried-out in cooperation with other Oceana staff in the Copenhagen, Brussels and Madrid offices.  

The candidate will:  

Develop and implement campaign strategies to successfully achieve Oceana’s fisheries goals   Produce reports, fact sheets, policy papers and other required policy materials  

Keep up to date on best practices and scientific methodologies and any innovations concerning the conservation and sustainable management of marine fisheries  

Act as a spokesperson for the organization in front of a wide variety of audiences, including media.  

Show excellent networking skills; being able to work in cooperation and maintain discussions with decision makers and stakeholders including governments and public administrations, fishing industry and other non-governmental organizations.  

Maintain secrecy and confidentiality when working with sensitive information.    

Qualifications:  

The position requires strong communication skills, both written and spoken. A successful candidate is also a consummate team player with a strong interest in marine environmental issues, and capable of working independently.  

The candidate will have a degree in marine science, biology or related discipline, and at least 3 years’ experience in policy and/or campaign work, preferably in fisheries. Policy experience and understanding of European Union processes is essential.  

He or she will have demonstrated excellent communication skills both oral and written and strong analytical skills. Able to synthesize large amounts of information, he/she will be able to work under tight deadlines.   

Oceana is a multicultural and multi-organizational NGO; therefore strong skills for team building and networking are required.    

Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English and in one of the main European languages. In addition Spanish will be a plus.  

Willingness to travel nationally and internationally is required.  

Additional information  

Gross annual salary will depend on expertise and knowledge but it is  competitive for an ONG.
