Vestas and Aalborg University is looking for a committed candidate to take up an industrial Ph.D. position within the field of supply chain development. The candidate must hold a master degree in related fields and preferably the candidate has industrial experience working with supply chain management, operations management, purchasing or similar. The project will be part of a major national research and development program (MADE), which will offer the candidate an attractive and dynamic work setting. The study will take its outset in Vestas’ supply chain and will work with solutions and methods related to supply chain (re)design. The wind turbine industry is perhaps one of the most coordination intensive manufacturing industries, due to its deep and complex sourcing structure involving many partners, and due to the dynamic technical and commercial requirements that affect the supply chain. Therefore, the potential from innovating the supply chain is significant both strategically as well as financially. As such Vestas serves as a strong show-case for agile supply and for the potentials from model based supply chain orchestration. The project aims to address this in close collaboration with other related MADE initiatives. MADE The Ph.D. candidate will participate in the national platform MADE (Manufacturing Academy of Denmark) where Vestas and Aalborg University are key partners (see more here http://www.made.dk). MADE is an initiative established to support Denmark as an attractive manufacturing location and the overall competitiveness of Danish companies. The MADE platform will promote research, development, implementation and testing of innovative solutions such as new organizational forms, flexible automation, intelligent products, new planning systems, and sustainable production systems. The platform aims to show case examples of operations excellence with an outset in challenging, but resourceful national conditions. The program is organised into a number of work packages. Background to the Particular Work Package: The WP takes its outset in the massive global relocation of most types of operations processes, which has taken place in the past two decades. This process is, however, preconditioned by the fact that Danish companies operate in rugged competitive environments and rely primarily on proprietary processes and unique products. This means that they have relied on longstanding sourcing relationships sustained by complex knowledge exchanges characterized by high switching costs. This means that although Danish companies have come quite far in relocating most parts of their operations overseas, they have done so at a great initial cost, followed by intense coordination efforts and a high level of strategic lock-in against partners. It may, therefore, be argued that Danish companies have been able to utilize the full potentials of global operations only to a limited extent. The thesis of the MADE WP, which the candidate is expected to contribute to, is that there must be a way to utilize the global potentials of model-based operations to support home-based centered coordination and development, while maintaining the proprietary and flexible competitive priorities of Danish MNEs. The objective of the MADE WP is: to develop and test models for knowledge centered coordination and development within the global supply chain. More specifically, the goal is to study the models effect on supply chain efficiency and their efficacy for retaining home-based control and development capabilities. The WP objective builds on four core beliefs: 1. The more globally dispersed, the more difficult it becomes to manage and develop in general, and from the home base in particular.
