DTU Biosustain at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as PhD in 'Development of an innovative bioprocess for protease production in Bacillus subtilis by integrating cell factory optimization and bioreactor engineering'.

The position is part of a large initiative granted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with the aim of establishing a Research Based World-Class Joint Education Program in Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing. The initiative is a collaboration between three departments at DTU - DTU Chemical Engineering, DTU Bioengineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability. This position will be hosted at DTU Biosustain and is one of six PhD positions posted for the program this year.

This position will be placed in the Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology (BCBT) group at DTU Biosustain. The BCBT group focuses on the use of chemical engineering and biotechnology tools to create innovative solutions that can accelerate the development of a bio-economy with potential environmental, economic, and social benefits. Currently, the group conducts research in various projects aiming at the development of efficient and sustainable process technologies to convert biomass into valuable products, including aspects of pretreatment, fermentation, evolutionary engineering, downstream and techno-economic assessment. Responsibilities and Tasks

This project aims to develop a new process for protease production using biomass hydrolysate as fermentation medium and a robust strain of Bacillus subtilis. The work plan will comprehend interdisciplinary activities in aspects including high throughput screening, laboratory evolution, metabolic engineering, biomass pretreatment, fermentation and bioreactor engineering.

Responsibility and tasks include, but are not limited to:

• Cultivation of the strain in biomass hydrolysate and data collection
• Directed evolution using high-throughput methods and metabolic engineering for the strain improvement
• Fermentation in bioreactors: bioprocess optimization (using statistical tools) in small-scale bioreactors, and scale up evaluation using bioreactor engineering principles
• Dissemination of results through scientific publications, patents and conference presentations
• Supervision of students

The project will be executed partly at DTU Biosustain, partly at DTU Chemical Engineering.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• Laboratory experience with fermentation, evolutionary/metabolic engineering
• Excellent written and spoken English

We expect that you are an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Also, a good sense of humor will be appreciated.

Salary and Appointment Terms
