DTU Biosustain at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as PhD 'Metabolic engineering and bioprocess engineering'.

The position is part of a large initiative granted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with the aim of establishing a Research Based World-Class Joint Education Program in Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing. The initiative is a collaboration between three departments at DTU - DTU Chemical Engineering, DTU Bioengineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain). This position will be hosted at DTU Biosustain and is one of six PhD positions posted for the program this year.

This position will be placed at DTU Biosustain, section of Bacterial Cell Factory Optimization, which works on producing biochemicals and proteins using various bacterial cell factories with the goal of enabling cost efficient production from renewable resources. The research group also develops novel genetic tools for optimizing and controlling production. DTU Biosustain has a total staff of approx. 250, of which 10 is working in the group of Bacterial Cell Factory Optimization.

Responsibilities and Tasks

The main focus of this job will be to apply state-of-the-art metabolic engineering and synthetic biology methodologies for the production of biochemicals and proteins using both gram positive and gram negative production organisms, including for example E. coli and B. subtilis. The successful candidate will be responsible for engineering the microorganisms with a special focus on developing genetic tools that enable two-stage fermentations.

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Professor John Woodley at DTU Chemical Engineering, where techno-economic analysis and pilot scale fermentation will be carried out.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

We are looking for a candidate with a solid background in:

• M.Sc. degree in microbiology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, biotechnology or equivalent
• Cultivation and engineering of for example E. coli or B. subtilis
• In-depth understanding of bacterial physiology and metabolism
• Theoretical and practical aspects of metabolic engineering
• Knowledge of bioreactors will be advantageous

Additionally, the candidate should have:

• Solid skills in Design of Experiments as well as data analysis and presentation
• Strong work ethics
• English proficiency
• Strong communication skills to efficiently interact with a diverse group of researchers in a multi-cultural work environment

We expect that you are an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Also, a good sense of humour will be appreciated.

Salary and Appointment Terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
