Novo Nordisk Foundation PhD student in Microbial Physiology & Biotechnology

DTU Bioengineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as PhD in Microbial Physiology & Biotechnology. The position is part of the PhD Program within the Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing Initiative, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The initiative is a collaboration between the DTU Departments Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability. This position will be hosted at DTU Bioengineering and is one of four PhD positions posted in this call.

This position will be placed in Department Bioengineering, section Synthetic Biology, working with the application of genetically encoded, fluorescent metabolite sensors for the evaluation of physiological states in Corynebacterium glutamicum. The project aims at the development of novel approaches to asses strain performances under different, industrial relevant cultivation conditions.

The section has a total staff of approx. 35, of which 7 is faculty.

Responsibilities and Tasks


The purpose of this project is to develop a series of novel genetically encoded sensors for the evaluation of intracellular NADPH levels in bacteria. The sensors will be functionally tested and characterized in a set of different C. glutamicumstrains. Finally, the here developed sensors and strains will be used for process optimization in scale-down bioreactor experiments.

• Your main responsibilities will be to design and optimize genetically encoded sensors, their biochemical characterization, and finally their application for process optimization
• You will accomplish this by the use molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and fermentation technology; including the use of the DTU Fermentation core state-of-the-art facilities for investigation of quantitative microbial physiology and high-throughput phenotypic characterization
• You will communicate research results by presenting data at regular meetings and international conferences, and write reports and manuscripts for publications

The day-to-day work will be performed in close collaboration with other researchers at DTU Bioengineering and DTU Chemical Engineering. Collaboration includes active participation in national and international meetings and conferences, sharing of data and results, contribution to joint publications.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

We are looking for a candidate with a solid background in:

• Bacterial physiology and molecular biology
• Protein biochemistry and fluorescence microscopy
• Microbial cultivation and process modelling

We expect that you are an efficient team worker, have a structured and analytical working approach, good laboratory skills, and good communication skills, and a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Also, a good sense of humor will be appreciated.

Salary and Appointment Terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
