Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD Fellowship in feline cardiology to commence as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to three years.

Background
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common heart disease in cats. Our research has provided new knowledge about genetic, molecular, diagnostic and clinical aspects of this intriguing disease during the last 12 years.
The aims of this PhD programme is to contribute to further in depth understanding of disease mechanism, early and better diagnostics and better treatment of familial heart diseases in cats. Furthermore, to contribute to breeding programmes and facilitate breeders to reduce the occurrence of a specific heart disease in their breed.

A final project abstractJV_description will be established in cooperation with the principal supervisor, co-supervisors and collaborating research groups. However, the candidate is encouraged to contribute to the development of the project abstractJV_description.

Required qualifications

• DVM degree
• Authorization to practice veterinary medicine in Denmark
• Danish or Scandinavian speaking, as the PhD student will have duties in the clinic including consults with Danish speaking clients
• High motivation and basic scientific skills are essential
• Good communication skills both oral and written, including English usage
• Good collaborating skills are essential
• Documented job experience from specialized small animal cardiology practice
• Documented experience with advanced echocardiography eg. TDI and speckle tracking

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) are to:

• Manage, carry through and conclude your research projects, from experiments to analyses of samples
• Participate in relevant clinical activities in our feline cardiology clinic and screening programmes
• Actively participate in PhD courses
• Write scientific articles and finalize your PhD thesis
• Participate in national and international congresses
• Conduct a research stay at an institution abroad
• Teach and disseminate your research

Key criteria for the assessment of candidates

• Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme

• Relevant work experience

• Experience with veterinary cardiology and advanced echocardiography

The successful candidate is also required to be resourceful and to possess good interpersonal skills.

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.
The successful candidate will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences. Employment as a PhD fellow will be conditional on successful enrolment in the PhD programme according to the rules stipulated in “Bekendtgørelse nr. 18 af 14. januar 2008 om ph.d.-graden.“

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around DKK 25.759 (ca. 3.434 EUR) plus pension. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

The appointment as a PhD fellow is for 3 years. It is conditioned upon the candidate’s successful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidate.

The further process
