PhD in Biomass Particle Morphology and Combustion Properties

A PhD student position is available at the CHEC Research Centre at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The PhD project study will work on the development of size and morphology characterization methods for biomass particles and development of biomass particle combustion characterisation methods relevant for power plant utilisation. A large increase in the use of biomass pellets on Danish power plants is planned, and it is wanted to improve the capability to predict the influence of biomass type, pre-treatment and milling on the combustion process in suspension fired power plant boilers. A collaboration project on advanced utilization of wood pellets will take place as a collaboration between Dong Energy, HOFOR and DTU Chemical engineering. This PhD project will be a part of this collaboration project. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of the studies is to support an efficient and fast conversion of pulverized coal-fired power plant boilers to operation on biomass fuels by investigating key issues that can ensure an efficient and effective milling of biomass pellets in existing power plant coal mills and facilitate high fuel flexibility, boiler availability and electrical efficiency in the appertaining boiler systems. The work includes: Development of methods to determine adequate biomass particle size and particle morphology as well as the improvement and development of a combustion evaluation test. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering. Strong skills, previous experience and a great interest in experimental work are essential. Previous experience with modelling work and programming will also be an advantage. Applicants must have analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. Furthermore, fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is required.
