PhD in Investment Behaviour and Uncertainty in Energy Saving

DTU Management invites applicants for a PhD in Investment behaviour and uncertainty in energy saving. Danish energy policy includes ambitious targets for energy savings that are important for reducing CO2-emissions and the dependency of fossil fuels. Large saving potentials exist, however, there is great uncertainty related to the specific implementation of savings and limited knowledge of behavioural, structural, and economic obstacles leading to a slow implementation. The project develops methods and models prioritizing energy saving initiatives and quantifies economic consequences including economic activity, employment and public finances. The 3-year PhD project is part of the SAVE-E project funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. The research project running 2015-2018 will examine what makes Danish households and companies invest in energy-saving solutions. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of the PhD project is to understand key parameters related to energy saving investment decisions by industries and how these provide the basis for policy design. This includes: •Modelling uncertainties in energy saving investments using real option theory and stochastic programming. •Modelling and analysing energy saving investments in industries: distinguishing between investments as by-products of cost reducing investments and investments to directly target energy cost reduction. •Investigating whether financial products like futures, swaps, and other derivatives can be used to quantify and/or control the risk of investments in energy savings (Alizadeh and Nomikos, 2004). A decision support tool based on stochastic programming will be developed enabling a combination of financial products. •Investigating whether a combination of a dynamic programming approach (stochastic optimal control) and a multi-stage stochastic linear programming approach (SLP) can give the necessary flexibility in the investment decision while limiting the complexity of the solution process (Mulvey, 2004; Konicz et. al., 2013). The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of Professor David Pisinger and Senior Researcher Nina Juul. Qualifications The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Approval and Enrolment The applicant should have a MSc in Operations Research, Computer Science, Algorithm or a related subjects. Good English skills and programming experience are expected. Knowledge of mixed-integer programming solvers and modelling languages is also an advantage.
