A PhD scholarship on 'wind energy and society' is being offered by DTU, as part of the EU-supported Marie-Curie Innovative Training Program project 'MISTRAL'. The successful candidate will be hosted and supervised by the department of Management Engineering (Lyngby campus), in collaboration with the department of Wind Energy (Risø Campus). This project (ESR 11) will belong to the work stream of Work Package 5; Market dimensions to social acceptance.

Research Field & Objective

As a consequence of the optimizing of the planning procedures in the form of top-down regulations and assessment procedures, there is little room for influence from local residents on a proposed project. The objective of this project is to explore new collaborative ways in which local values and interests can become part of a negotiation process in the planning procedures, creating a space for influence and local empowerment. Tangible issues such as share ownership, shadow flickering, noise and setback distance will be investigated to assess their potential as negotiators to improve acceptability. These issues are typically part of the EIA and this project will furthermore explore how this instrument can be more appreciative to local values, including the concept of a Social Impact Assessment as a component.

Responsibilities and tasks

As an Early Stage Researcher (ESR), you will be an active member of a research project team assisting in the delivery of research and training activities of the MISTRAL Network, working on the specific topic of 'Social acceptance, path dependency and the low carbon transition' and required to work towards the expected results of this project.

The Early Stage Researcher will undertake research in the framework of the project MISTRAL: 'Multi-sectoral approaches to Innovative Skills Training for Renewable energy & sociAL acceptance'. The Early Stage Researcher will be funded for 36 months through the prestigious Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) programme. This is an initiative by the European Commission to train creative, entrepreneurial, innovative researchers, who are able to face current and future societal challenges, and will convert knowledge and ideas into products and services for the economic and social benefit of Europe.

MISTRAL is an interdisciplinary network which works to understand the complex challenges in improving the acceptance of renewable energy infrastructure investment, and provide innovative solutions to break down barriers to the transition to a low carbon economy in Europe.

Key research tasks:

• Provide recommendations for improved planning procedures, including the Environmental Impact Assessment, where tangible issues can be used as negotiators to take account of local values and interests.
• Development of skills in negotiation and appreciation of the local development process.
• Participation in the outreach and dissemination activities of the MISTRAL Network project, commensurate with research at PhD level.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Candidates should have a master's degree in a social science related field, e.g. science- and technology studies, human geography, planning and public participation, sustainability studies, design and innovation studies, sociology, environmental management, anthropology, political science, etc. or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in a social science related field of study.

Moreover, we expect the candidate to have a strong interest in wind energy and qualitative research experience.

The working language of the project is English and thus the candidate must have suitable skills in both written and spoken English. The project is, however, located in Denmark and skills in Danish or a Scandinavian language is considered a strong advantage.

The candidate must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctorate. This 4 year period is measured from the date of obtaining the degree which would formally enabstractJV_title to embark on a doctorate.

They must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their selection for this post.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by a committee from DTU Management Engineering and DTU Wind Energy, in consultation with the other MISTRAL project members.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The workplace is primarily DTU Lyngby Campus, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. However, co-supervision and other activities will also take place on the DTU Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark. Moreover, all ESRs will participate in international secondments to other organisations in the MISTRAL network and outreach activities with audiences beyond the research community.
