Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position in Functionalized Light Robotics. The PhD project is part of the interdisciplinary research activities in the Center for Biopharmaceuticals and Biobarriers in Drug Delivery (https://biodelivery.ku.dk/ funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme.

This PhD project will be hosted at DTU Nanolab (as from 1 January 2019 the new name for DTU Danchip/Cen), Technical University of Denmark, and will involve close collaboration with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and Univ. British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The PhD training at DTU will be enriched with a research stay with collaborators in Europe, Japan or North America.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD candidate, in collaboration with experts in optics and biomedical sciences, will develop new Light Robotic systems and methods tailored for unprecedented control and precision in the study of biological mechanisms in drug delivery of biopharmaceuticals through biobarriers. Light Robotics is an emerging approach to develop novel nanobiophotonics solutions by leveraging and integrating developments in optical micromanipulation, microfabrication, microfluidics, spatial light modulation, microscopy and nanophotonics. The PhD project builds upon the leading Light Robotics expertise and platform available at DTU Nanolab and is supported by DTU's advanced infrastructure for micro/nanofabrication and nanoscopy. This project will explore a number of approaches and integrate suitable methods into new Light Robotics tools to be tested and validated together with biomedical collaborators.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in optical engineering, applied physics, micro/nanotechnology or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree. A solid background in Fourier optics is an asset. The ideal candidate has strong laboratory skills and research experience within experimental biophotonics, 3D design, microfabrication, optical trapping, advanced microscopy and optical systems development. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are important for the extensive networking and scientific dissemination activities associated with the project. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. Starting date is 15 January 2019.
