DTU Compute's Section for Image Analysis and Computer Graphics invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position starting July 2019. The project is financed by The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) as an international university alliance stipend between DTU and The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL).

Project Description

The PhD position covers a cross-disciplinary project within the topic of multi-modal integration and machine learning for mining neurological microstructural features from quantitative and diffusion MRI as well as 3D histology data. The project focuses on exploring new regimes of biophysical models of brain white matter, optimization of multi-dimensional diffusion encoding and qMRI to disentangle specific microstructural features in a non-invasive manner in healthy and diseased subjects. The student will be 1) deriving the underlying theory of the models and MR physics, 2) designing synthetic microstructural environments based on 3D histology and runnig Monte Carlo simulations, and finally 3) setting up preclinical in vivoandex vivoMRI experiments.

The project is a university alliance project and will be carried out in collaboration with theSignal Processing Laboratory (LTS5), The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) headed by professor Jean-Philippe Thiran, as well as the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR), Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre. The student will be working at mainly at DTU, but also at DRCMR, and must expect some travel activities for research stays at EPFL.

Requirements

Candidates must have a master's degree in physics or computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document insights into theory and practical diffusion MRI, Monte Carlo simulations, and knowledge on how susceptibility impact brain white matter, and in addition have a background in physics. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
