This project aims to advance the state of the art in time-lens based technologies for high capacity optical access networks and utilize their potential for energy-efficiency. This will be done by developing novel optical processing units and schemes, developing linear/nonlinear components optimized for broadband applications and developing advanced sub-systems based on optical time lenses. The project will explore novel ways of using integrated optical circuits for ultrahigh capacity energy-efficient optical access networks beyond the 'techno barriers', and finally demonstrate 10 times more capacity and orders of magnitude more energy efficient systems.

A new highly flexible and scalable optical line terminal (OLT) structure based on time lens optical Fourier transformation (OFT) will be explored for optical access networks. The work will hold a theoretical and experimental part. The theoretical part will involve the development and simulation of novel principles for the Lens-PON system. Here, a physical understanding of non-linear optics will be required, with focus on the Kerr non-linearity in glass fibers and associated effects such as cross-phase modulation, self-phase modulation, four-wave mixing and parametric amplification. The experimental part will include extensive system characterizations of the developed Lens-PON system. In this process, the candidates will acquire a solid experience in optical communication systems.

Responsibilities and tasks

This PhD position will investigate the research topics below using both experimental and theoretical methods, but not limited to these topics:
  • Evaluate theoretically achievable transmission capacity, distance, subscriber count and energy efficiency of the proposed Lens-PON system.
  • Model the time-lens processer for Lens-PON.
  • Develop an understanding of the relation between time-lens properties and the performance of the Lens-PON.
  • Investigate MAC schemes on timing and wavelength control for robust Lens-PON system.
  • Design and optimize fibre based time-lens signal processor.
  • Demonstrate Lens-PON system experimentally.

As part of the Danish PhD program the student will follow a number of PhD courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external research stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
