PhD Project in Machine Learning for Smartphone-based Monitoring and Treatment of Unipolar and Bipolar Disorders

DTU compute would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting March 2016. The project is partially funded by the Innovation Foundation funded project “The RADMIS project: Reducing the rate and duration of re-admission among patients with unipolar and bipolar disorder using smartphone-based monitoring and treatment”. Project Description Unipolar disorder (depression) and bipolar disorder (affective disorders) are common mental diseases with lifetime prevalence of 15-20% and 1-2 %, respectively. Depression imposes a very high societal burden in terms of cost, lost productivity, morbidity, suffering, and mortality, and is a leading cause of disability and disease burden worldwide. The RADMIS project aims at combining cognitive behavioral therapy, smartphone-based monitoring and treatment and machine learning predictive methodology to improve outcome and welfare for patients with unipolar and bipolar disorders. This PhD-project will focus on the predictive machine learning, clinical data analysis and interpretation aspects of the project. In the first year of the project different machine learning techniques such as linear, non-linear deep learning and random forest as well as different types of sensor and self-reported data will be investigated in order to come up with accurate predictive models. The developed methodology will be implemented by Monsenso ApS and used in the clinical experiments carried out in the RADMIS. In the second and third year of the project the candidate will work closely with the clinical collaborators on developing prediction interpretation tools and on data analysis. Requirements Candidates must have a master degree in machine learning, computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document experience in predictive machine learning and collaboration within a clinical environment. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the ITMAN Graduate School Programme of DTU Compute.
