PhD project in Nonlinear Signal Processing in Optical Quantum Information Systems

DTU Fotonik, the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a candidate for a three year PhD position. Responsibilities and tasks One of the major challenges in state of the art optical communication systems is to ensure that the information is carried in a secure way from sender to receiver. Historically, this problem has been solved for example by the use of a secret key to encode and decode bits. The establishment of such a secret key, will in the future most probably be based on quantum optics and relies on the fact that it is impossible to tab of information from a quantum optics signal without the knowledge of the sender and receiver. The secret key is referred to as a quantum key. Currently, much research is focused on defining quantum keys using the polarization state of light as the basis and encoding the information within single photons. At present time promising candidates for on demand single photon emitters as for example quantum dots, are operating at short wavelength, shorter than 1550 nm, where the optical fiber has minimum loss. In addition, the most efficient single photon detectors also operate at similar short wavelengths. Consequently, wavelength converters are essential in quantum communication systems. Such functionality has been demonstrated to be achievable through the use of four-wave mixing. A significant step in application of four-wave mixing in any functionality in a quantum communication system is determination of the photon statistics at the output relative to the input. Another important step is to be able to predict the performance of QKD systems as for example quantum bit error rates. Such tasks will be the focus of the PhD project. The PhD project will be mainly theoretical. However, it is expected that the PhD project will benefit from strong synergy with experimental activities. Qualifications Candidates should have •A MSc degree or equivalent in theoretical or computational physics •Interest in collaborating with experimental groups •A strong drive and good communication skills Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU.
