Our department DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the science disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. Project Description
The main objective of ApPEARS http://www.appears-itn.eu/ is to train next generation researchers within the field of appearance printing using 3D and 2.5D printing techniques as well as extending further the understanding of the appearance of prints from two to three dimensions.

The objective of this PhD is to combine knowledge of material reflectance, optics, and industrial post-print surface processing to develop a series of novel surface types for use in industrial and artistic applications.

The plan for the PhD project is that the early stage researcher should:

• Identify an array of desired surface types, considering selected industrial and/or artistic requirements.
• Establish and characterize print and processing parameters that can be manipulated to arrive at such surface types.
• Design a system (model, algorithms) for modelling the appearance effect of the identified parameters.
• Test the system in selected applications to illustrate potential for increased freedom-to-operate in surface design.

Requirements
Candidates must have a master degree in Visual Computing, 3D Multimedia Technology, Engineering Design, Applied Mechanics, Mathematical Modelling, Computer Science, or some combination of these topics. Preference will be given to candidates who can document a keen interest in additive manufacturing and some knowledge of visual computing (3D modelling, light-material interaction, colour science, computer graphics). Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the DTU Compute PhD School Programme. The assessment of the applicants will be made by main supervisor Jeppe Revall Frisvad (DTU) and co-supervisors Are Strandlie (NTNU) and David Bue Pedersen (DTU).

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The candidate must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project (short stays such as holidays are not counted).

At the time of recruitment, the candidate must not have been awarded a doctorate degree and must be in the first 4 years of her/his research career.

The candidate must work exclusively for the project during the employment contract.

Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. Move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment.
