PhD project: Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx from Ships

Denmark is one of the world’s foremost shipping nations, leading in cargo transport, tanker shipping, refrigerated cargo, and offshore. Maritime transport and shipping benefits from low CO2 emissions and low noise levels but emissions of SOx and NOx are, however, generated. The issues related to NOx/SOx emissions are being targeted by the introduction of NOx control areas (NECAs) for new ships and global SOx regulations, generating a need for new technologies and engineering solutions. To come up with innovative solutions to these challenges the Danish Innovation Fund and the Danish maritime industry have joined forces in a private-public society partnership project named Blue INNOShip. As part of this project a PhD position within maritime flue gas cleaning for NOx is available The specific project involves collaboration between DTU-Chemical Engineering, Haldor Topsøe A/S, Alfa Laval A/S and A.P Møller Mærsk A/S. The highly efficient selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx using ammonia or urea as reductant is the most widely applied technology for cleaning of flue gases for NOx from stationary power plants. The technology also holds a great potential for application on-board ships, but performance is not yet optimised with respect to use in combination with marine equipment such as waste heat boilers and sulphur scrubbers. Important considerations include performance of the SCR reaction (including potential N2O by-product formation) at the elevated pressures of relevance to ships and the potential of flue gas SO2 and formed SO3 to react with ammonia and form ammonium bisulphate and ammonium sulphate, which may foul heat transfer surfaces (ship boiler), and plug catalyst flow channels and surfaces. The PhD project will among other include the following activities: •Literature survey of current knowledge on marine emissions, NOx SCR, SO2 oxidation and ammonium sulphate (AS)/bisulphate (ABS) thermodynamics •Pilot-scale investigation of vanadium SCR performance at marine conditions, including AS/ABS formation and potential capture in SO2 scrubber (at Alfa Laval test station, Aalborg) •Thermodynamic modeling of AS/ABS formation •Lab-scale Investigation of the oxidation of SO2 to SO3 at marine conditions •Lab-scale Investigation of the influence of system pressure on SCR kinetics and side reactions – derivation of kinetic models Expected project results: •To identify the optimal operational strategy with respect to dosing of NH3 in relation to the formation of ammonium bisulphate (ABS), forming sticky deposits and ammonium sulphate (AS), forming less sticky deposits. •Improved understanding of mechanisms and kinetics of the catalytic reactions (SCR NOx reduction and SO2 oxidation) •Publication of at least 3 articles in international peer reviewed journals and participation in international conferences Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in chemical engineering/chemistry or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Candidates with knowledge in catalysis will be preferred.
