PhD projects on Decoherence in Semiconductor Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

The Nanophotonics Theory and Signalprocessing Group at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has two fully financed PhD projects available within the research area of semiconductor quantum photonics. Cavity quantum electrodynamics, i.e., the controlled coupling of a quantum dot to a nanocavity, is expected to play an important role in future applications such as secure communications, quantum computation and quantum metrology. A particularly important effect limiting the quantum coherence of solid-state structures is the interaction between the quantum emitter and lattice vibrations of the environment, which lead to dephasing and restoring of classical behavior. The scientific objective of this research activity is to obtain a fundamental understanding of the effects that govern the quantum coherence of a quantum dot and to explore strategies for combating decoherence, with applications to single-photon sources and switches. The projects are part of a research project funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research and will take place in close collaboration with international partners. Project description Two closely related PhD projects have been defined: PhD project A will be theoretical and use techniques from open quantum systems to analyze the decoherence of quantum dots strongly coupled to waveguides and cavities and under the interaction with a reservoir of phonons. Dynamical quantum Zeno effects and the effect of a structured phonon reservoir will be explored with the purpose of reducing decoherence. PhD project B will be concerned with modeling, design and experimental characterization of specific devices for generating and switching single photons. The projects will be carried out in close collaboration with a postdoc already hired on the project and will exploit synergy with other research activities focusing on quantum dot dynamics, nanocavity lasers and switches. Qualifications Candidates should document: •a MSc degree or equivalent in physics or photonics. •a strong background in quantum optics and solid-state physics. •strong analytical skills, and for PhD project B also experience and interest in experimental physics. •a strong drive and good communication skills. Salary and appointment terms The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The annual salary amounts to approximately € 46,832 including pension. The employment is for a period of three years.
