PhD Scholarship for Miniaturization of Food Safety Analysis

The research group for Chemical Food Analysis, National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position focused on miniaturization of chemical food safety analysis. The PhD student will contribute to our strategic research area with chemical food safety with the objective to develop robust efficient and scalable analytical technology for chemical analysis of food for food safety. As a part of at large research initiative funded by the Danish authorities, DTU Food wishes to explore possibilities using micro- and nano-systems for realizing distributed, simple and cheap systems for food safety applications. This work will be performed in close collaboration with DTU Nanotech and is aimed to support DTU Foods role as National Reference Laboratory for most chemicals in food. Responsibilities and tasks The research group for analytical food chemistry aim to provide the best possible methods and data for assessment chemical risks from food. Most current methodologies are based on state of the art mass spectrometry that are of very high performance however they are also complex and expensive therefore not scalable for wide-spread use. Through a highly interdisciplinary project, the PhD student is expected to explore and realize miniaturized and simple analytical systems for sample pretreatment as well as sensing compounds of high relevance for food safety such as antibiotics residuals in milk, mycotoxins and pesticides in crops. The main task is the development of miniaturized sample pretreatment methods and the subsequent integration with sensors (optical or electrical). The developed miniaturized systems will be benchmarked against existing standard laboratory techniques. The goal is to demonstrate fully functional systems where food can be monitored in a simple and fast manner on a scalable platform opening up the possibilities for tests through the production and supply chain including consumer-based testing. The successful candidate will play a key and explorative role in the newly established Food safety initiative, interacting with several collaborators working in different disciplines, such as microbiology, microfabrication, optics and chemistry. Qualifications Candidates should have solid background in analytical chemistry bio/nanotechnology, chemical or material engineering with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in bio/nanotechnology, chemical or material engineering. The ideal candidate has good laboratory skills and knowledge about food and food safety, preferable with previous experience from masters project or work in: •Extraction, fractionation and concentration of the compounds from complex samples •Traditional GC an LC-MS analysis in food safety •Micro fabrication •Programming and multivariate data analysis •Good laboratory skills Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
