Are you interested in the interplay between tissue engineering and materials science?

DTU Nanotech is now offering a PhD scholarship within 3D printing of human heart tissue-models with embedded sensors.

We are a mix of engineers, chemists and biologists that collaborate to achieve interdisciplinary goals.

Organ-on-chip devices provide new means for studying human health and disease in the lab.These systems replicate physiologically relevant human tissues with healthy or specific diseased phenotypes in vitro, for instance to accelerate drug efficacy and toxicity tests. Ultimately, this may significantly reduce the time and cost of drug development. However, current devices have numerous shortcomings. In particular, consistent fabrication and data acquisition remains key challenges. Recently, multi-material 3D printing has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing these challenges.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD will be part of a collaborative project aimed at engineering 3D cardiac tissues with embedded soft sensors.

You will have to contribute with a range of skills across various scientific fields. Your key responsibilities will be:

• Stem cell culture
• Tissue development within devices
• Tissue characterization using imaging and gene expression analysis
• Development and characterization of printable tissue scaffold materials
• In vitro drug tests

Demonstrated previous experience with mammalian cell culture is required.

Experience within one or more of the following areas will also be an advantage:

• Stem cell differentiation
• 3D cell culture
• Confocal microscopy and automated image analysis
• Molecular biology techniques, including microarray and qPCR techniques

You must be highly independent, driven, and be able to speak and write English fluently.

The PhD project will include an external stay with international collaborators.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree within biomedical engineering, bioengineering, biology, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.Your work place will be at DTU Lyngby campus in Denmark. You will be a part of Assistant Professor Johan Ulrik Lind's research group.
