PhD scholarship in 3D Printed Microenvironments for Mini-Organ Culture

At DTU Nanotech we conduct cross-disciplinary research where micro- and nanotechnology is applied for a wide range of applications. The PolyCell group explores 3D microengineering of soft materials for advanced cell culture to create new opportunites for improving biological understanding and enabling future personalized medicine.

We invite you to join us on our current journey to engineer human mini-organs. We invite applications from you, a highly qualified candidate, for a 3-year PhD scholarship on stereolithographic 3D printing of soft materials for engineering the mechanical microenvironment of human cells to produce mature mini-organs (organoids).

The work will include 3D microprinting, modification, and analysis of printed structures to engineer their mechanical properties, and assessment of the printed structures' ability to induce differentiation and maturation of 3D cell cultures.

The PhD scholarship is part of the project 'Microengineering soft mechanical properties in 3D for next-generation cell differentiation and maturation systems' funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark. Within the project you will work in close collaboration with other researchers in a highly interdisciplinary and dynamic team covering experimental disciplines of advanced 3D printing, synthesis of new printable polymer materials, 3D cell culture, and structural topology optimization.

Responsibilities and tasks

The greater project aim is to devise novel 3D designs, materials, and methods for culture of mature human organoids, with current focus on modeling the human heart, small intestine, and immune organs.

Within this scope, you will be the key responsible for

• 3D microprinting of candidate structures in soft materials;
• Chemical modification of printed structures to guide cell attachment;
• Analysis of the structures' mechanical and chemical properties;
• Culture of 3D cell constructs on the structures and assessment of their function.

We will provide access to custom-built world-leading 3D microprinting facilities for multi-material printing, structural, chemical, and mechanical analysis instrumentation, and state-of-the-art cell culture and cell analysis facilities.

You will perform your work in close collaboration with colleagues synthesizing new printable materials and colleagues providing insight on optimal structural designs, in both cases based on feedback from your experimental work. Thus, you should like team work and be able to interact and collaborate with researchers across scientific fields.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
