PhD scholarship in Absolute Sustainability Assessment

DTU Management Engineering's division for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA) covers research and development of scientifically based engineering methods for decision support for environmental and social sustainability. The research is thus positioned at the interface between natural science and decision-support. A particular focus area is research and development of methods for quantifying the environmental impacts associated with anthropogenic activities and their use of technologies, products, and services.

The field of research is within life-cycle assessment and sustainability science.

The PhD candidate will contribute to research within the emerging field absolute sustainability assessments in which the sustainability of anthropogenic activities is evaluated relative to absolute sustainability references (e.g. the planetary boundaries).

Responsibilities and tasks

You will contribute to advancing the field of absolute sustainability assessments with a particular focus on use in life-cycle assessment (LCA).

Your research will cover central aspects of absolute sustainability assessments addressing one or more of the following challenges:

• derivation of absolute sustainability references at global and regional level;
• development of characterization models and aggregation of impacts across locations and time;
• methods for allocating ecological spaces between activities;
• application and testing of absolute sustainability assessment methods in case studies from industry and circular economy

Using state-of-the-art concepts of absolute sustainability and life cycle assessment, you will contribute to integrating and operationalizing absolute environmental sustainability approaches. Key activities include: (a) development of mathematical frameworks, models, and indicators for integrating planetary boundaries and absolute sustainability assessment in life cycle assessment; (b) comparing the new absolute sustainability indicators with existing absolute sustainability indicators and indicators traditionally used in life-cycle based decision making on selected case studies.

As an example, your research could include deriving and operationalizing spatially differentiated ecological boundaries for emissions of nitrogen and phosphorus to the aquatic environment. This would involve:

• Defining spatially differentiated boundaries for both nitrogen and phosphorus
• Developing spatially differentiated characterization models
• Developing aggregation approaches over locations and over time
• Showing the application of the derived methods in a real LCA case study

You will also help out in teaching LCA and sustainability to students as part of our university courses and you will likely also be responsible for co-supervision of bachelor and/or master projects.

You will become part of an energetic and dynamic research environment.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
