The project will be carried out at the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre DHRTC, also called Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU. As part of the National Strategy on Oil and Gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to enable increased recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. As a part of this strategy, the Centre wants to undertake research to increase the structural integrity of existing offshore structures and at the same time to reduce maintenance cost. The Centre is therefore carrying out investigations on: How to estimate actual stress instead of using nominal stress as normally done according to existing standards. Responsibilities and tasks This investigation is carried out mainly as in situ measurement on a structure in the North Sea. The actual stresses are planned to be determined either from the wave forces estimated in related projects and/or directly from structural response using modal decomposition. In both cases it is planned to update the FE models using operational modal analysis. The estimated stresses are compared with stresses estimated from strain gauges attached to the considered offshore structure. The main goal of the project is to obtain new knowledge of reduction of the uncertainty of the fatigue stress when actual stress is being estimated. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
