PhD scholarship in Advanced CFD computation of breaking wave loads on offshore wind turbine substructures

DTU Wind Energy is seeking a PhD student for a scholarship on “Advanced CFD computation of breaking wave loads on offshore wind turbine substructures”. The PhD scholarship is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark and is part of the DeRisk project – a research collaboration between eight academic and industrial partners. The aim of the present PhD project is to apply and develop advanced CFD methods to steep and extreme wave loads on wind turbine substructures and hereby assess load effects due to 3D wave formation, co-existing currents and varying bottom slope. Responsibilities and tasks Loads from extreme and breaking waves are often dimensioning for the substructures of offshore wind turbines. While standard design is based on established engineering models, advanced load effects are often neglected and compensated for by safety factors. Examples are formation of extreme waves in 3D wave fields, the effect of a sloping bottom, the effect of a co-existing current and loads from breaking waves. Recent developments in experimental and numerical methods make it possible to quantify these load effects and incorporate them into simpler models. The PhD study The PhD study takes its outset in a newly developed coupled solver, where OpenFOAM is driven by an outer potential flow wave model to allow efficient computation of highly nonlinear and breaking wave loads. The study will make use of measured data to quantify and characterize a number of physical effects. These are •The effect of the viscous boundary layer for ringing loads and the secondary load cycle. A DES/LES approach will be developed. •The effect of a co-existing current on the wave loads. •The effect of 3D wave focusing on wave loads •Characterization of the impact pressure field from breaking wavesAdditionally to the CFD computations, simpler load models will be studied and formulated, to enable the load effects to be applied in Engineering design. This will be done in collaboration with other researchers in the DeRisk project. DeRisk comprises four PhD projects (see http://www.derisk.dk). Close collaboration with the other DeRisk PhD students and researchers are expected. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Henrik Bredmose. In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to: •Background in computational fluid mechanics and numerical methods in fluids •Strong programming skills such as Fortran, Matlab, C •Experience with CFD methods, particularly OpenFOAM and free surface flows •A background in Offshore Engineering and wave hydrodynamics •Sound physical insight and the ability to critically judge a set of results or measurements •Collaborative skills •The ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities Supervisor Main supervisor: Henrik Bredmose, DTU Wind Energy. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
