DTU Energy Conversion at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, invites applications for a PhD scholarship in the area of computational analysis of electronic transport at the cathode of Metal-air batteries. The PhD project is funded by the Villum foundation and is aligned with the Department focus area of batteries. The project also involves collaboration with international academic partners, e.g. the groups of Prof. Yang Shao-Horn at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Prof. Ángel Rubio at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg, and Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham at SUNY Binghamton. Project description The successful candidate will develop computational algorithms based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (DFT) to model the electronic transport at the cathode of Metal-air batteries in tunnelling and polaronic regimes. The PhD project focuses on understanding the sudden death process that takes place in lithium –air batteries during their discharge, addressing which of the two regimes, polaronic or tunneling, is dominant during the different stages of the discharge. The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental groups. The PhD project will be also linked to other computational projects working on screening of materials with the aim of improving the electron conductivity at the cathode of Li-ion and Metal-air batteries. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in physics, chemistry or materials science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in engineering. The successful candidate: •has good communication skills in English, both written and spoken •is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects •We favour candidates with experience in computational/theoretical physics, chemistry and related areas Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
