PhD scholarship in Design and Optimization of Selected Oleochemical Processes

The PhD position will be supervised at the CAPEC-PROCESS research center of DTU Chemical Engineering department in joint cooperation with Alfa Laval Copenhagen which provides the employment for this position. It is an early stage researcher (ESR) position and part of “ModLife: Advancing Modelling for Process-Product Innovation, Optimization, Monitoring and Control in Life Science Industries” – a H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015 project funded by EU Executive Research Agency (ERA). Responsibilities and tasks •Supervisors: Dr. Bent Sarup (Alfa Laval), Gürkan Sin (DTU) •Objectives: Design, optimization and control of next generation sustainable processes for the production of oleochemicals such as glycerol, fatty acids, derivatives of fatty acids (esters, alcohols, amines, amides etc). In particular, the project will develop a general library of models for design and operation of oleochemical processes that includes (but is not limited to) fat-oil splitting and fatty acid fractional/distillation processes. •Expected results: (1) Methodologies particularly applicable for design and sustainability in the oleochemical industry, (2) development of process model coupled with kinetics and thermodynamic models for fat-oil splitting, (3) development of general model library to support design and simulation of oleochemial process by integrating validated/improved property and process models developed by ESR8. (4) Perform base-case process design and add multicriteria sustainability and techno-economic performance analysis. (5) Perform process optimization and control strategies for the selected processes with respect to multi-criteria sustainability and economics analysis. These analyses are to include uncertainty and sensitivity analysis due to crude oil composition as well as market fluctuations of feedstock and products. •Planned secondments: DTU, 2 months: modelling/control/monitoring; Imperial College, 1 month: optimization methods; Art Photonics, 1 month: sensors and measurement techniques. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Assoc. Prof. Gürkan Sin, Dr. Bent Sarup and Dr. Alexandr Zubov. The following competences are desirable in the candidates: •Modelling and simulation (property and process modelling), numerical methods, mathematical programming (optimization). •Process synthesis and design, separation processes, process and energy integration. •Interest in development of prototype software/simulation environment. •Being an industrial Ph.D. position some years of industrial background will be an advantage. Since the positions is ESR position funded by H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015, the following eligibility and mobility criteria holds: •The candidate must be — at the date of recruitment — an ‘early stage researcher’ (i.e. in the first four years of his/her research career and not have a doctoral degree). •At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
