PhD scholarship in ‘Diamond-Based Nanoelectronics’

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position at NanoSYD Center in the Mads Clausen Institute (MCI) in Sønderborg. NanoSYD is world known for its strong synergy of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The PhD project is centered on diamond-based nanoelectronics. The fully funded position is available as of May 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a 3-year period.

Affiliated to the research area of “Nanostructured Materials in the Quantum Regime”, the aim of this position is to build the foundation for diamond-based nanoelectronics. Diamond is increasingly being recognized as a piece of jewelry for science and technology, due to a broad spectrum of its properties and wide-ranging applications. The extraordinarily high breakdown voltage and thermal conductivity, remarkable inertness to chemicals and contamination, and tunable electronic properties upon doping make diamond not only a drilling tool for mining and machinery but also a promising candidate for the next-generation electronics.

As a PhD student, you will be carrying out research under supervision of Professor Horst-Günter Rubahn, and co-supervised by Assistant Professor Gufei Zhang. The techniques in focus are design and fabrication of diamond-based nanostructures/devices as well as ultralow-noise electrical transport measurements under extreme conditions (at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields), alongside a range of standard thin film characterization techniques. You will be encouraged to develop your own ideas. You will publish and present your work both at international conferences and in high-impact scientific journals. In addition, you will be involved in the daily co-supervision of Master and Bachelor students and assist in teaching activities.

Candidates who have a Master degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) in a field relevant to the mentioned PhD project, e.g. condensed matter physics, microelectronics, nanophotonics and so on, may seek the scholarship. Preferred candidates are experienced in electron beam lithography, focused ion beam etching and/or LabView programming. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required.

The successful applicant will be enrolled as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of Engineering, SDU.

Conditions of employment
Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position. Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after members of the PhD Committee has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. The enrollment and employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 3-year period. Further information about salary and conditions of employment.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

An employed PhD fellow cannot have other paid work during the employment.

Requirements for the position
To be considered for the position it is required that the applicant meets the requirements for enrollment in the PhD school. Applications are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. 

An assessment committee will assess all applications. Each applicant will receive his/her own assessment. 

If shortlisting is used, only shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an assessment committee.

An interview might be part of the process.
