DTU Mechanical Engineering covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within the field of mechanics, including mechanical properties of materials, strength and vibration analyses, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, safety theory and control engineering. The study is funded partly by the European Community through the Horizon 2020 project Hercules-2 and partly by DTU. More than 30 universities and private companies are involved in the Hercules-2 project. The present study will consider lifetime performance improvement of the piston- ring/cylinder-liner friction and wear by optimization of the lubrication system in large two-stroke diesel engines. The overall aim is reduced lifetime maintenance, operating cost, friction and wear, lubrication rate and particle emissions. MAN Diesel & Turbo SE is the largest manufacturer of two-stroke marine diesel engines and will take part in the project. The Ph.D. study should commence by May 1st, 2015. Responsibilities and tasks The study will include work in the areas: •Investigation of the flow of the cylinder lubricating oil. •Development of new test setups and modification of existing test rigs to enable the current research activities. •Experimental investigation of the basic transport mechanisms involved in the free/forced flow of the lubricant injected into the cylinder liner of a large two-stroke marine diesel engine. •Validation/tuning of the theoretical models with the experimental findings. •A comparative test on a two-stroke marine test engine for model verification. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
