DTU Management Engineering offers one 3-year PhD scholarship in Effective implementation of sustainability approaches in companies. The position is based in the division for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA). This scholarship is part of a joint PhD scholarship initiative between DTU and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) under the Nordic Five Tech alliance. Responsibilities and tasks Integrating sustainability considerations in business are gaining increasing attention within industry. Focus is on integration and implementation of concepts such as Circular Economy, Sustainable Product Design, Sustainable Manufacturing, Product Service Systems, Life Cycle Management and Life Cycle Assessment. The successful candidate will contribute to development of methodology & tools for quantitative sustainability assessment, tailored to industrial needs in a life cycle management context. Key research questions include: •How can tools & methods be improved and adapted, to include aspects such as company culture, industry branch, supply chain position, stakeholder involvement, and others? •How can company-specific implementation obstacles be identified and remedied? •Which combinations of managerial tools and frameworks (e.g. target-setting, KPI definition, organizational set-up, etc.) support long-term implementation? •How can sustainability assessment be used to ensure both improved environmental performance and increased competitiveness? The work will be based on an analysis of current tools & methods targeted sustainable product and service development with focus on companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with limited experience in implementation of tools and methods for Design for Sustainability – within a wide range of industry branches. The candidate will obtain a joint doctoral degree from DTU and NTNU, pending a successful dissertation defense at the home university. This scholarship runs in parallel with a similar scholarship based at NTNU, which is advertised in parallel to this one. Both PhD students are expected to work closely together, and it is expected that the DTU student will keep office at NTNU for up to a year during the 3-year period (and vice versa for the NTNU candidate). Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken and due to an expected close collaboration with Nordic companies, either Danish, Swedish or Norwegian language skills are an advantage. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Michael Hauschild and Associate professor Niki Bey according to the qualification requirements stated above.
