PhD scholarship in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology

DTU Environment invites highly talented young researchers who have obtained outstanding results during their MSc studies and who have demonstrated excellence and potential in their field of study, to apply for a PhD scholarship in the Research Group “Risk Assessment of Chemicals and Nanomaterials” at DTU Environment, which consists of 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 Post Docs and 7 PhD students. We do research within environmental chemistry, environmental toxicology and environmental risk assessment of chemicals and nanomaterials. The PhD student will be part of a research team working with new partitioning based approaches: We use (1) enrichment of chemicals into clean polymers for the development of new analytical technologies, (2) chemical loaded polymers for tightly controlling concentrations of chemicals and (3) combining clean and loaded polymer in completely new experimental systems. Such partitioning based approaches are applied in fundamental and applied environmental research focusing on the exposure, fate, risk and effects of organic chemicals. We have extensive collaboration with academic and industrial partners worldwide. For more information about recent research of the team: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Philipp_Mayer Responsibilities and tasks The working title of the PhD study is “Linking the exposure and effects of organic chemical mixtures to their equilibrium partitioning concentrations in lipids”. This research includes the development of new passive dosing approaches for application in ecotoxicological studies of organic mixtures. The aim is to improve the linkage between the observed effects and the internal exposure of the test organism. The research will also include the further development of state of the art equilibrium sampling techniques in combination with HPLC and GC-MS for application in exposure, fate and monitoring studies. The aim is to further improve the linkage between equilibrium sampling measurements and internal exposure within animals and humans. The work will include •Conceptual and experimental work with state of the art partitioning based methods •Equilibrium sampling combined with analytical work based on HPLC, GC-MS and automated Solid Phase Microextraction •Passive Dosing combined with carefully designed ecotoxicity tests with algae and invertebrates •Experimental work will be done in close collaboration with relevant national and international partners. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
