PhD scholarship in Fabrication and Magnetic Characterization of Layered Structures by Means of Electron Holography

The Center for Electron Nanoscopy and the National Center for Nano- and Microfabrication at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Cen/Danchip) are seeking a PhD student to work on the development and application of exchangeable biprisms for electron holography based on MEMS technology. Micro- and nanofabricated structures often result in properties, which are different to what is found in more bulk-like forms of the same material. Properties such as magnetism, charge distribution, electronic structure, etc. depend strongly on the nanostructure of such tailor-made materials. Electron microscopy and associated techniques serve a unique toolbox for unravelling such structure-functionality relationships. In particular, Electron holography allows for visualizing and quantifying magnetic and electrostatic properties at the nanometer scale. Combining high-end nanostructuring techniques with high-end characterization will give fundamental insight in physics of magnetic and/or semiconducting nanostructures. The applications of electron holography can cover measurements of magnetic properties in layered thin film structures, visualization of charge distribution on catalytic nanoparticles, effect of gas on practical electron holography experiments (mean inner potential) in combination with structural and spectroscopic characterization of materials interfaces. Responsibilities and tasks The successful candidate will be involved in nanofabrication of hardware for electron holography and fabrication of nanostructured materials. In relation to the before mentioned fabrication, application and further development of advanced electron microscopy techniques will be one of the candidate’s tasks as well. The candidate will be part of ongoing research at DTU Cen/Danchip together with high-level experts in electron microscopy and nanofabrication. The fabrication of the exchangeable biprism and the fabrication of the nanostructured materials will mainly take place at the state-of-the-art nano- and microfabrication facility DTU Cen/Danchip. The advanced electron microscopy characterization will be conducted at the electron microscopy facility at DTU Cen/Danchip at Lyngby Campus which is housing a unique suite of electron microscopes ranging from scanning electron microscopes through dual beam FIB/SEM instruments to high-end aberration corrected (S)TEMs providing state-of-the-art means of structural/elemental analysis. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
