The National Food Institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a PhD position affiliated to the Research Group for Food Allergy in the Division of Diet, Disease Prevention and Toxicology - a dynamic, sociable and highly ambitious research environment.
The primary research focus of the group is the relationship between different protein-chemical characteristics of food proteins and their capacity to induce either allergy or tolerance. Our overall objective is to develop new and improved preventive, treatment and diagnostic methods.
The PhD candidate will take part in a larger research and innovation project, concerning prevention and treatment of food allergy. The PhD position will focus on animal models of peanut allergy, and will concern planning and execution of 1) animal experiments, 2) immunological analyses, and 3) mechanistic studies. You will work in close collaboration with other researchers in and outside the group.
Responsibilities and tasks
The purpose will be to establish solid scientific evidence for safe and efficient strategies for peanut allergy prevention and treatment. New approaches will be investigated involving various administration routes in models of disease prevention and treatment. Results will be obtained through animal and human studies.
The project will cover the following tasks:
- Peanut protein characterisation
- Animal studies to elucidate the inherent and oral sensitising capacity as well as eliciting capacity of peanut by various routes of administration
- Animal studies to elucidate primary preventive capacity and desensitising capacity of different peanut products
Further tasks will be:
- Disseminate results at conferences and through scientific articles
- Supervision duties of bachelor or master students
- A mandatory external research stay
- Attend PhD courses (30 ECTS)
Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree within life science.
The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge and experience within both biochemistry and immunology. The preferred candidate is ambitious, has a high motivation for research excellence and good command of written and spoken English..
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Knowledge in food allergy, and/or
- Experience in analytical protein? chemistry, and/or
- Animal models, and/or
- Cell based assays and mechanistic studies.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
