PhD scholarship in genus-scale analysis of gene cluster evolution

DTU Systems Biology is a major Danish research and teaching department in the field of systems biology and is involved in a wide range of research activities within its field. We are seeking a PhD student to be affiliated with the Network Engineering of Eukaryotic Cell Factories (NetEng) group and with collaborations into other groups at the department, in particular the Eukaryotic Molecular Cell Biology group of Uffe H. Mortensen. The scholarship will interface with other projects in both groups. The NetEng group has a focus on industrial biotechnology, synthetic biology and the application of systems biology tools to understand the eukaryotic cell factory. This position will be centered in one of our focus areas: Aspergillus genomics. Responsibilities and tasks Fungi of the genus Aspergillus are of large economic importance due to their widespread application in industry and their natural capabilities as highly efficient cell factories. In particular, the Aspergilli are natural enzyme producers, and preferred hosts for heterologous enzyme production. In these projects, the students will analyse genomes of more than 300 species of Aspergillus and related species to identify novel traits and dynamics in gene cluster evolution and resistance development. The project is multidisciplinary with equal attention given to computational biology and molecular biology. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. It will be advantageous for a successful candidate to have experience within the following disciplines, and a desire to acquire the rest. Computational skills: •Comparative genomics/DNA sequence analysis •Programming (Perl, Python or similar) •Use of databases for structuring of information (e.g. MySQL) Laboratory skills: •Cultivation of microbes, in particular fungi •Molecular biology/engineering of fungi, in particular Aspergillus It is furthermore advantageous for the applicant to have a mindset towards translational science as aspects of the project are expected to generate intellectual property. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
