PhD scholarship in Heat Pump Integration in the Greater Copenhagen District Heating System

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering is collaborating with a number of commercial and public companies in a project aiming at demonstration and design of large-scale heat pumps in the Copenhagen district heating system. The aim of the project is to accelerate the use of large electric heat pumps for district heating through industrial cooperation, research and experimental development. The project is the second phase of the total project, which includes large-scale heat pump investments carried out to demonstrate optimal design, smart system integration, cost efficiency and climate benefits. Large electric heat pumps are expected to play an important role towards CO2 neutral DH systems. The heat pumps can make up a significant supplement to heat production on biomass, and furthermore, electric heat pumps, when operated in a smart way, can support wind power integration in the overall energy system. In relation to this project we are looking for a PhD student with background in the field of applied engineering thermodynamics and with an interest in the development of the future energy system. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD project has the focus on thermodynamic models and simulation of large-scale heat pumps for various heat sources and district heating systems. The aim of the work will be to determine the technical and economic potentials and barriers and identify ways to optimize heat pumps systems for these applications. The work will include: •Generic mapping of performance of potential configurations of heat pumps based on modelling and simulation •Development of a decision support tool for heat pump design and selection •Active participation in test program and data assessment for heat pumps in the Copenhagen district heating system Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
