PhD scholarship in Highly Absorbing Metamaterials for Broadband Applications

The focus of the Acoustic Technology Group at DTU Elektro and the Centre for Acoustic-Mechanical Micro Systems (CAMM) is to conduct research in architectural acoustics, vibration, transducers, sound field analysis, measurement techniques, acoustical-mechanical interaction, numerical methods and optimization.

Denmark can boast of world-leading companies in electroacoustics, hearing aids, acoustic instrumentation and acoustic consultancy. Our research is very well connected with them at all levels, from student projects to fundamental research.

We are initiating several projects on metamaterials with the aim of contributing with new designs and improvements of acoustic components and systems, such as loudspeakers and building elements. We are hoping that you can assist us in researching how to bring acoustic metamaterials and numerical optimization into practical applications in this new research project.

We broadly define acoustic metamaterials as materials that display extraordinary properties not found in natural materials with respect to sound and vibration characteristics.

We want to use acoustic metamaterials to achieve enhanced sound absorption in a reasonable space. This is a very active field of research, where we believe we can contribute with our in-house numerical tools dealing with viscous and thermal losses on the boundaries. Similarly, we see numerical optimization as a promising tool for the creation of new advanced designs.

Responsibilities and tasks

The main goal of your project will be the design and practical implementation of innovative acoustic absorbing materials that can outperform the solutions currently employed in acoustics in terms of bandwidth, absorption capability and feasibility.

We imagine that you will work towards this goal in order to develop metamaterial-based absorbers that have practical applications. Preferably, they should work for a broad range of frequencies, in particular low frequencies, where traditional absorbers have difficulties. To this end, you would develop and apply methods for the design of absorbing materials. We have created an in-house Boundary Element modelling tool, which has recently been extended to include advanced shape optimization techniques. You are encouraged to use and further develop this tool within the project. Finally, we expect you to consider issues such as fabrication at industrial scale, ease of use and durability.

Depending on your interests and competencies, we foresee a range of different application extensions to be considered throughout the project. One such extension may be the application of the developed materials in ducts and room absorbers, which may require adaptation of the model in different ways. For duct absorbers the inclusion of fluid flow would be desirable, but for room absorbers an extension to cover a broad range of angles of incidence could also be included. We are looking forward to discussing your ideas on the subject.

You will be joining a team of three other researchers who are working on different aspects and applications of metamaterials in acoustics.

As for qualifications, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a relevant M.Sc. degree, such as acoustics, physics, mechanical or civil engineering, who has experience in at least one of the following areas:

• Room and duct acoustics
• Acoustic metamaterials
• Numerical modelling and optimization of acoustic systems
• Viscous and thermal losses in acoustics

You are also expected to be able to work in a highly collaborative environment, inside the team as well as with the other project partners. Our team is a part of a larger consortium and we keep close relations and regular interactions with many other groups locally and globally. Thus, fluent written and spoken English is essential. The proficiency in Danish language is not a requirement.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. You can apply if you are expected to graduate from a master's degree shortly.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

As the PhD project is a part of a larger research collaboration with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea, the PhD project will include an external research stay at KAIST.
