PhD scholarship in Integrated Transducers for Bio/Chemical Detection

A multidisciplinary research project is being established at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) at the Technical University of Denmark aiming to develop miniaturized transducers for bio/chemical detection. Responsibilities and tasks The project will use Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasound Transducers (CMUTs) developed in the MEMS Applied Sensors group to detect chemical/biological substances. The CMUT is based on a resonating plate of silicon and has a vacuum cavity behind the plate leading to a very high quality factor in air because of no significant damping due to the vacuum. This translates to a high sensitivity. Therefore, CMUTs can be used for detecting tiny mass changes. To use the CMUT’s for bio/chemical sensing the silicon plates will be functionalized using techniques developed in the Colloids & Biological Interface Group and the Surface Engineering Group. The project will investigate several approaches to sensor design. We will create CMUT arrays having different resonance frequencies and different sensitivities. This will effectively allow an increase in the detection range of the sensors, both very large and vary small concentrations can be detected by the same device. We will investigate the sensor design for three different purposes: 1.Gas detection 2.Detection of a chemical substance in water, for example pesticides 3.Biological detection, where we will focus on detection of a model protein based on antibody recognition. Within the project we will also investigate various surface chemistries to optimize detection of molecules in each of the above-mentioned areas. In the project CMUTs will be designed and fabricated in the cleanroom at DTU. Therefore, knowledge and experience in that field will be an advantage. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
