PhD scholarship in Market Mechanisms for Integrated Energy System Management

The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks a PhD student for a 3-year scholarship in the field of market mechanisms for integrated energy system management. The position is funded by the project EnergyLab Nordhavn that aims at utilizing the Danish metropolitan area Nordhavn as a live laboratory for future smart-energy technologies, innovative business models and new operational solutions on all scales - components, buildings, grid infrastructures and system level - and provide basis for design and dimensioning of the energy infrastructure of future sustainable dense low-energy cities. Responsibilities and tasks The successful candidate will participate in a project team of DTU researchers, energy component manufacturers and utility engineers. Future energy systems in a smart city context will consider electricity, heat and gas in a more integrated manner. In parallel, the operation of energy systems is to be considered in a market environment in order to optimize social welfare while generating appropriate signals for further investment. In that context, the PhD candidate will focus on new market structures and mechanisms facilitating the optimal operation of integrated energy systems, while accounting for the operational constraints from its various components, and to limitations related to the city setup. Emphasis will also be on market coupling, dynamic pricing and new market mechanisms with high uncertainty on both supply and demand sides. Here we will give more attention to the coupling of electricity and heat, since this corresponds to the set-up for Nordhavn. The applicants should fulfil the following requirements: Mandatory: •Knowledge of power system operation and integration of renewable electricity production •Knowledge of electricity and energy markets, as well as market clearing mechanisms under uncertainty •Knowledge of optimization tools (e.g. GAMS, Gurobi, etc.) as well as data handling and programming tools (e.g., Matlab, R, Python) Appreciated: •Advanced skills in mathematical programming and Bayesian inference methods •Knowledge of power system regulation and economics •Ability to present results in technical reports, and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals Qualifications Candidates should hold an MSc in Electrical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSC in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
