The Nanophotonic Devices Group manufactures and characterizes optoelectronic and photonic devices for applications in communication and medical imaging. Fabrication is done in DTU Nanolab where facilities for silicon, GaAs and InP devices are available. Our optical labs are in the new building of DTU Fotonik. The work have enabled a number of high profile results on nanoscale lasers, nonlinear integrated photonics and a spinout company on lasers for optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Microelectromechanical tuneable vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (MEMS tuneable VCSELs) have shown remarkable performance for optical coherence tomography where fast wavelength sweep and a large dynamic coherence have enabled 3D imaging of large volumes. In the STEPS project we will characterize, use and expand the properties of MEMS tuneable VCSELs to open new application areas.

Responsibilities and tasks

We will fabricate optimized lasers and characterize/control them with the aim of achieving unprecedented dynamic coherence which will enable arbitrary pulse generation with subpicosecond time resolution [Yvind WO2015071379]. This will be an entirely new way of generating such high bandwidth, high peak power signals and allows direct electrical control of the emission. A post doc will work on fabricating optimized devices while the PhD student will demonstrate the device in the lab, both assisted by existing staff.

Your research task will be

• Characterization of MEMS VCSELs
• Setup of stable test setup possibly including construction of small chamber for operating MEMS under vacuum
• Modeling of actuator/laser/compressor including noise properties.
• Measurement of laser sweep properties (using imbalanced interferometer and fast digitizer)
• Construction of control signals for bidirectional actuation of MEMS and SOA gate.
• Generation of tailored compressed signal and measurement of properties (FROG, RF spectra etc).

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Processing of MEMS devices.

Knowledge and skills from optoelectronics, microelectromechanics and ultrafast optics (or optical communication) is needed to successfully complete the project. Experience from one or more of these is needed and the ability to learn the rest.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
