PhD scholarship in Modelling and Experimental Study of Industrial Cyclones

The CHEC research centre at DTU Chemical Engineering invites ambitious and qualified candidates to apply for an open PhD position on industrial scale cyclone modelling.

Our research aims at improving the understanding of flow patterns of gas and particle phases, as well as their interactions in industrial scale cyclones. By CFD modelling and measurements at full scale plants, an improved understanding of the mechanisms of separation, heat transfer and erosion in cyclone preheaters will be obtained. The PhD project will be conducted in a close collaboration with the companies FLSmidth and ROCKWOOL.

Responsibilities and tasks

You will find working solutions to major industrial challenges in the areas of plants producing building materials by high temperature processes. In particular, you will:

• Develop a generic CFD model that is able to simulate industrial scale preheater cyclones and validated the model for various industrial cyclone configurations
• Provide detailed local measurements of flow pattern, temperature profile and erosion rate in full size industrial cyclones
• Understand the flow patterns, heat transfer and separation efficiency as well as erosion inside industrial cyclones

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The candidates with CFD experience would be preferable.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The normal working place will be at DTU Lyngby campus, but the candidate is expected to stay in the partner companies regularly.
