PhD scholarship in Mucoadhesive Microcontainers for Oral Drug Delivery

DTU Nanotech conducts cross-disciplinary research where micro- and nanotechnology is applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines as well as applications. The Nanoprobes group is a large and highly multi-cultural group, with different research branches focusing on drug delivery, biosensing and environmental monitoring. Responsibilities and tasks The Nanoprobes group at DTU Nanotech wishes to employ a PhD student for 3 years to work in a highly interdisciplinary project focusing on developing mucoadhesive microsystems for oral drug delivery. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with different national and international research groups, and within the framework of the recently granted Center of Excellence – IDUN (http://www.IDUN.dtu.dk). Activities involve: (i) design and development of mucus-penetrating nanoparticles or drugs; (ii) filling and coating of polymer microcontainers; (iii) dissolution- and adhesion studies. Cleanroom fabrication of microcontainers may also be part of the project, as well as in vitro and in vivo studies on uptake and toxicity. Work involving intestinal tissue from pigs may be necessary. Qualifications The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree (or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to master’s degree) in bio- or nanotechnology, pharmacology, biochemistry, biology or similar. A master’s project or previous work experience regarding drug delivery, especially to or through mucosal membranes, will be beneficial. It is an advantage to have knowledge or experience within some the following areas: •Nanoparticle characterization •Drug formulation •Tissue, cell and/or animal experiments •Cleanroom processing Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
