PhD Scholarship in New Methods for Fabrication of Pyrolysed Carbon Microelectrodes

Applications are invited for the fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship. The PhD scholarship is related to the VKR Young investigator grant ‘Intelligent 3D cell scaffolds for environmental applications’ funded by the Villum Foundation. In this context, the PhD student will work in close collaboration with two other PhD candidates and a postdoctoral researcher. The aim of the overall project is to develop a new generation of electrically conductive 3D scaffolds. The main contribution of the PhD scholarship is to develop new approaches for the fabrication of 3D pyrolysed carbon microelectrodes on polymer substrates. In the pyrolysis process, conductive carbon structures are obtained through carbonisation of polymer templates at high temperatures in inert atmosphere. The polymer template structures have to be placed on a carrier substrate (e.g. Si or Quartz) which has to be stable in these conditions. This is a major limitation due to high costs, low design flexibility and low sustainability in particular for the fabrication of disposable devices. The focus of the PhD scholarship is to develop new methods which allow to obtain 3D pyrolysed carbon electrodes directly on polymeric films. For this purpose, in particular the interaction of laser light with polymers will be investigated. The structural, electrical and electrochemical properties of the carbon materials will be characterized and optimized. Finally, the performance of the carbon microelectrodes will be evaluated in bioelectrochemical applications. Research environment The PhD student will be supervised by Associate Professor Stephan Sylvest Keller, Senior Researcher Dirch Hjorth Petersen and Professor Anders Kristensen at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The PhD will be associated with the Biomaterial Microsystems group headed by Stephan Sylvest Keller. Microfabrication will be carried out in the cleanroom facilities of DTU Danchip and the laboratories of DTU Nanotech. For characterization state-of-the art tools such as XPS, AFM, Raman and FT-IR are available. Imaging will partially be performed in the electron microscopy facilities of DTU CEN. Qualifications The applicant should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, material science, engineering, electronics or physics. The ideal candidate should have experience in polymer chemistry or technology, micro- and nanofabrication, laser optics and/or microelectronics. The PhD project will be very interdisciplinary and the candidate is expected to have the interest to explore new applications of carbon-based materials. A high grade average is decisive to be considered for the scholarship. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
