Department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as PhD student on the topic: “Seasonal PCM Heat Storage for a solar space heating and domestic hot water combisystem”. The fellowship is co-funded by the Sino-Danish Center for Research and Education, the Technical University of Denmark and the COMTES project (no: 295568) under EU’s programme FP7. Candidates must be eligible according to the recruitment guidelines of the Sino-Danish Center, i.e. they must be able to work in the Institute of Electric Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China for 9 months in total during the 3 years of PhD study. Responsibilities and tasks Due to the mismatch of solar energy resources and the demand for heating, long term efficient storage of solar heat is essential for an innovative solar heating system that covers the heating demand with a high solar fraction in the range of 80%-100%. The goal of the project is development and demonstration of a novel compact seasonal heat storage based on stable supercooling of a phase change material. With the concept a partly heat loss free heat storage is achieved, i.e. if the PCM has been fully melted in summer when there is excess solar energy, it can cool down in its liquid phase to the surrounding temperature and still preserve the latent heat related to the heat of fusion. The heat storage can be left in this state with no heat loss until a heat demand occurs for example in winter in which case the solidification is activated, the heat of fusion is released and the heat storage temperature increases almost immediately to the melting temperature of the PCM. The project will result in a demonstration solar heating system with the seasonal heat storage that is significantly better than water based systems. The PhD project will be supervised both by Department of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark and by the Institute of Electric Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The PhD project is a part of the ongoing EU COMTES project. The candidate will also contribute to teaching at Department of Civil Engineering. A part of the study will be carried out at the Institute of Electric Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. A high motivation for research and solid written and oral communication skills in English are prerequisites of any successful application. The successful candidate will have expertise on solar heating and dynamic simulation models for solar heating systems. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the Construction, production, civil engineering and transport program of DTU.
