PhD scholarship in Railway Substructure System based on Asphalt

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites interested candidates for a vacant PhD position in the research project Roads2Rails: Innovative cost-effective asphalt based Railway Construction system (http://innovationsfonden.dk/da/case/fremtidens-danske-tog-koerer-paa-asfalt ) funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark (Innovationsfonden). The position is affiliated with the Section of Geotechnics and Geology. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD project deals with the development of computational models for evaluation and comparison of different structural designs in railway construction, and thereby enabling optimization of the preferred design system, including the effects from use of asphalt layers. Mathematical models are developed to introduce soil–structure interaction in the optimization of the support structure. The models will be validated against test measurements. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The qualified candidate should preferably have knowledge/experience on: a) Computational & continuum mechanics b) Finite element modelling c) Asphalt & Bituminous materials d) Soil dynamics Documented demonstration of programming skills will be considered an asset. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
